2011-12 Grants

The Bristol Warren Education Foundation is pleased to announce the grant recipients for the 2011-2012 school year. Winners represent a range of disciplines across all six district schools for a combined award amount of $33,500.

Winners are as follows: MT. HOPE HIGH SCHOOL

War Room Project/Mentoring Program – A field trip to a community college to expose at- risk students to the possibilities that can be associated with completing high school in an effort to decrease the drop out rate.

E-reader – Two e-readers to be used as a tool for students with disabilities in the classroom to reinforce reading comprehension of all content areas (History, English, Science etc.) using a multi- sensory approach.

Community String Project – Purchase 20 violins to increase number of students in need able to participate in strings program.

Laboratory Instrumentation Project – Students repair damaged/broken lab equipment from big bio-tech firms and use them once fixed in the lab. Students meet and talk with experts from firms too. The grant will be used to cover replacement parts, repairs to fix equipment and transport needed to talk with experts.

Robotics Competition – Local competition fees to help students compete in additional matches with their built robots.

Stories in Clay – To increase student proficiency in the Art Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements while meeting goals in literacy by using clay and reflective essays.

KICKEMUIT MIDDLE SCHOOL
Natures Classroom – Developing a sense of community, responsibility, cooperation and self

confidence through nature based academics. Overnight field trip.

Beginning Band Project – The goal of this project is to provide individualized instruction to beginning band students at Kickemuit Middle School by professional musicians.

Angie Dolan Wellness Center – Build the capacity of the Wellness Center to provide more students with the opportunity to get physcial activity in a safe,inviting and socially-tolerant enviornment.

Making Cultural Connections:China – The project will engage all middle school general music students in deepening their knowledge and understanding of Chinese music and culture using classic Chinese percussion instruments and Orff instruments (paid for by grant).

HUGH COLE
Colonial Day Project – Provide a range of activities that highlight the life of the Early Colonist,

involving parents and community members as volunteers and experts for 5th graders.

Science Enrichment Program – Raise NECAP performance by taking science out of the textbook and to support the existing curriculum in ways that the class room teachers in may not be able to.

Hugh Cole School Productions – HCS Productions seeks to enrich the K-5 curriculum by giving shape and form to textbook knowledge through the creative process of filmmaking.

Physics of Music Making – The RI Philharmonic program will reinforce sound concepts all third grade students learn in science and general music. Expert from Philharmonic will help students use science vocabulary in an authentic setting and bring abstract sounds down to the concrete level.

COLT ANDREWS
Building a Peaceful Community – This project's objective is to reduce bullying behaviors at

Colt Andrews through the Jedii Circus production and complementary class instructions.

History Minutes – Through digital video students will meet the basic elementary Grade Span Expectations and serve as historians.

Reset Boxes – Boxes of "reset" activities are available in each classroom to help students where redirection, staff assistance and other strategies may be ineffective.

COLT ANDREWS & GUITERAS

A Bridge Across Cultures – Explore Chinese culture through Grace Lin's books and author visit. Develop an understanding of another culture and relate to the common threads between Chinese and American culture.

GUITERAS

Audubon Society Learning to Use Outdoor Space – Expand learning beyond the classroom by integrating the outdoor environment surrounding Guiteras School into the school's curriculum, providing benefits of environmental education.

ROCKWELL
RadKids Endowment Program – radKIDS, Inc. is a nationally recognized empowerment

program that helps children recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Christmas Carol – Integrated arts program involving theater and learning.

K-Welcoming Kit for new kindergarten students – Provide all incoming kindergarten students a welcoming package.
